1994 Commemorative Ornament

History of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing
and the Centennial Year of the Stamp

To commemorate the Centennial of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing's production of postage stamps, THA's 1994 ornament depicts the Bureaus' first "home of its own" and the frame design of its first postage stamp. It measures approximately 2-3/4 by 3 inches. Prior to 1894, private banknote companies had printed postage stamps. In its earliest years, the Bureau's physical facilities were divided between the basement and attic of the Treasury Building, next to the White House. Dumbwaiters were used to transport paper and printed securities between the two floors. Because of the less than ideal conditions for manufacturing processes, land was purchased at 14th and Independence Avenue, SW in 1878 to build the Bureau's first "home of its own."
