Commemorative Ornament
History
of the United States Customs Service,
Treasury's Oldest Bureau
THA's
1996 ornament celebrates Customs' earliest missions: revenue collection
and enforcement of our national tax laws at sea. The ornament design
contains the second U.S. Revenue Cutter EAGLE, along with the Customs
ensign on the framework. The ornament measures approximately 2-3/4
by 3 inches.
After
establishment in 1789, the customs collection districts immediately
became the largest providers of revenue to the Federal Government.
Alexander Hamilton, first Secretary of the Treasury, recognized
the strategic need for customs vessels for the collection of revenue
and enforcement of national laws and planned the creation of a semi-military
naval service, initially known as the Revenue Marine, and later
the Revenue Cutter Service.
