Commemorative Ornament
25th
Anniversary of the Mission of the Bureau
of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms
THA's
1997 ornament recognizes one of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and
Firearms's (ATF's) earliest missions: collecting revenue and enforcing
laws on whiskey tax, in the face of dissent by Pennsylvania farmers
engaged in what was to be called the "Whiskey Rebellion." Included
in the design theme is the ATF 25th Anniversary logo, with is its
seal modified to reflect this special anniversary year. The ornament
measures approximately 2-3/4 by 3 inches.
ATF
is the successor Treasury organization to the group that collected
tax on whiskey produced by the farmer in the 1790s. When the Bureau
of Internal Revenue was created in 1862, its ATF Division assumed
these responsibilities. In 1972, ATF became a separate Treasury
bureau.
