Commemorative Ornament
Histories
of the Office of the Comptroller of the
Currency and the Office of Thrift Supervision
THA's
1998 ornament contains components of the early official seal of
the Comptroller of the Currency and the ornate wall of one of the
vaults built in the Treasury Building in 1863-1864 for the Comptroller
of the Currency. Also, it contains the current official seal, with
symbolism relating to the Office of Thrift Supervision's role in
financing residences, along with the Comly Rich House, which in
1831 was the first private residence to have a mortgage financed
through a thrift institution. The ornament measures approximately
2-1/4 by 2-3/4 inches.
These
two Treasury bureaus approve or disapprove applications for national
bank charters and Federal thrift institutions, supervise the operations
of national banks and regulate Federal and state-charted thrifts
belonging to the Savings Association Insurance Fund.
